Labor rates vary up to 60% by state
- Under 30 ft (small ornamental)
- 30–60 ft (mature shade tree)
- 60–80 ft (large oak, elm)
- Over 80 ft (old-growth, redwood)
Height is the biggest single cost driver
2 trees: −8% · 3–5 trees: −12% · 6+ trees: −18% per tree
- Light maintenance trim
- Standard trim
- Heavy trim / major limb removal
Heavy limb removal adds ~45% vs. a standard trim
- Easy — open yard, clear surroundings
- Moderate — fence, nearby shrubs
- Difficult — near house, power lines, or structures
Difficult access adds 20–45% to base cost

How We Calculated This
Approximate estimate only.Actual costs vary by contractor, site conditions, and local market rates. Always get 2–3 written quotes from licensed, insured companies before scheduling any work.
What to do next
- Use this estimate to set your budget before calling contractors
- Get at least 2–3 written, itemized quotes from licensed, insured companies
- Ask if debris cleanup and haul-away is included in the quote
- For large trees or work near power lines, request ISA-certified arborists
How These Estimates Are Generated
Tree trimming base costs are derived from national pricing data for trimming and pruning services and adjusted by tree height, trim type, access difficulty, and state labor-rate multipliers.
What these estimates cover: Typical residential trimming in a standard access situation, including labor, equipment, and debris cleanup. They do not include emergency premiums unless that option is selected.
What they don't replace: A professional site assessment. Actual contractor prices vary based on individual overhead, seasonal demand, equipment availability, and site conditions no formula can fully capture.Always get at least 2–3 written quotes.
Reference Pricing
Average Tree Trimming Cost by Size
National averages for a single tree with standard access and a standard trim. Your estimate above is adjusted for your state and project specifics.
Small (under 30 ft)
$100 – $300
e.g., ornamental, young maple
Medium (30–60 ft)
$200 – $700
e.g., mature oak or ash
Large (60–80 ft)
$450 – $1,200
e.g., large elm, eucalyptus
Very Large (80+ ft)
$800 – $2,000
e.g., old-growth oak, redwood
Note: These are single-tree ranges with standard access and a standard trim. Heavy limb removal, difficult access, palm trees, and urgent scheduling increase costs above these ranges.
What Affects Your Tree Trimming Cost
Six factors explain most of the price variation you'll see between contractor quotes.
Tree Height
The primary cost driver. Taller trees require longer equipment reach, more crew time, and more care when lowering branches. A small ornamental might take 30–60 minutes; an 80-ft tree can take half a day.
Trim Type
A light maintenance trim that shapes the canopy costs much less than removing major structural limbs. Heavy limb removal requires specialized rigging and heavier equipment, adding 40–50% over a standard trim.
Number of Trees
Most contractors discount multi-tree projects because setup, travel, and equipment costs are shared. Two trees typically run 8% less per tree; six or more trees can save 18% per tree compared to individual pricing.
State & Local Labor
Labor rates vary 40–60% across the US. California, New York, and Hawaii average 30–45% above the national baseline. Southern and Midwestern states typically run 10–20% below.
Access & Obstacles
Trees near fences, power lines, or structures require sections to be hand-lowered on ropes rather than dropped freely. This multiplies labor time significantly — expect 20–45% more for difficult access.
Palm Trees
Palm trimming requires removing heavy fronds with different techniques and disposal. Expect a 10–20% premium for palms compared to standard trees at similar heights.
When Trimming Is Not Enough
Trimming addresses overgrowth and dead branches. In these situations, trimming is likely a short-term fix — full removal may be the safer, more cost-effective choice:
- More than 50% of the canopy is dead or diseased
- Significant trunk cavities, cracks, or fungal growth at the base
- Tree has recently developed a noticeable lean toward a structure
- Root damage is causing foundation, sidewalk, or utility problems
- Tree is dead or storm-damaged beyond viable pruning
